Houthi Rebels Seize Yemen State Media, Battle Soldiers

SANAA, Yemen — Rebel Shiite Houthis battled soldiers near Yemen's presidential palace and elsewhere across the capital Monday, seizing control of the country's state-run media in a move an official called "a step toward a coup."

The fighting near the palace marks the biggest challenge yet to the government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi by the Houthis, who seized the capital, Sanaa, during their advance in September across parts of Yemen.

Cellphones banned for supervisors too at Goa Board exams

timesofindia.indiatimes.com - PANAJI: Cellphones belonging to students have long been collected and kept out of the examination halls at the Class X and XII public exams of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. This year, the board has issued directives disallowing supervisors too from carrying cellphones inside the examination halls.

Officials said that the aim is to further tighten security to prevent paper leakages.

"Only the top officials at an examination centre, like the examination conductor, deputy conductor and the observer, have been allowed to carry cellphones on them from this year.

The Patent and Trademark office is finally being run by someone willing to reform the patent system

androidauthority.com - Yesterday, the U.S. Senate confirmed former Google executive Michelle Lee to head the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, a position that has been vacant for two years.

Lee is the former deputy general counsel and former head of patents and patent strategy at Google. She will now head an agency whose main role is to determine which inventions deserve a patent. Since her new position has been empty for two years (even though she was interim head until being confirmed), she will face a massive backlog in examining patents.

Internet to Disappear Claims Google Exec

On Thursday, Google chairman Eric Schmidt said that he expects the internet as we know it to "disappear" in the coming years.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week, Schmidt was asked about his predictions for the future of the web and his response came as a surprise to many. "I will answer very simply that the Internet will disappear," said Schmidt at The Future of the Digital Economy panel.

According to new reports, China is bolstering the "Great Firewall" expanding its censorship to include several virtual private networks.

Reported by the Financial Times, many virtual private networks are either completely unavailable or intermittently available in the country. Users have often turned to VPNs to circumvent the country's strict censorship laws which block many Western sites like Facebook, Google, and Twitter.
